Dragon Salt Works

Dragon Salt Works, located on the first floor of The Shirt Factory, an arts and healing center with more than 12 retail shops and 80+ artists, is a specialty shoppe carrying Himalayan salt lamps, spa products, gourmet salts and other salt products such as salt shot glasses and grilling and chilling planks. The salt is vegan, being just pure salt, of course, but we’re featuring it because of a unique salt they carry: Black Salt, also known as Kala Namak.

This lower-sodium salt carries a sulfur flavor and smell and the label says that it can be used in vegan dishes to mimic the taste of eggs, like in a tofu salad if you wanted it to taste like egg salad. I can attest to this! It has an unmistakable hard-boiled egg flavor.

Wikipedia says this salt is “used extensively in South Asian cuisines of Bangladesh, India and Pakistan as a condiment or added to chaats, chutneys, salads, all kinds of fruits, raitas and many other savory Indian snacks. It is considered a cooling spice in ayurvedic medicine and is used as a laxative and digestive aid. It is also believed to relieve intestinal gas and heartburn.”
